Lake Clark, Alaska

Lake Clark is one of the best places to photograph grizzly bears. They are all around the lodge and everywhere we travelled in our all terrain vehicle. Eight photographers would stand side by side as a bear approached leisurely eating the sedge. When she was within 12 feet or so of us, we asked the guide if we should leave. He said “no, but quietly and slowly everyone take two steps to the left.” We all did which gave her the opening she needed to just keep on proceeding as if we weren’t there. My friend and I were at the very end of the line of photographers and we could have reached out and touched her as she went by.  Scott said “absolutely don’t do that.”
